The debut of Slant Duo (Dave Wilson and Richard Valitutto) and the Los Angeles release of debut album “Conditional Tension” by Andrew Tholl, Corey Fogel, and Devin Hoff
This evening of improvisation is a release of Conditional Tension, of Slant Duo as a project, and of Dave Wilson from Los Angeles as he prepares to leap over the Pacific to his new position at the New Zealand School of Music.
Slant Duo will premiere several new collaborative compositions and concepts which they have been recently developing to record at the end of May. These pieces are influenced by Macedonian folk song, the languages of Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy, recastings of Gershwin and Scriabin, and exploring improvisation concepts and extended instrumental techniques.
CONDITIONAL TENSION is the debut album from the improvising trio made up of violinist Andrew Tholl, percussionist Corey Fogel, and bassist Devin Hoff. These three players have worked with each other through the years in various circumstances and combinations, including as members of experimental pop artist Julia Holter’s recording and touring ensemble. Composed and recorded live at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, California, CONDITIONAL TENSION is a document of the group on one evening. The performances captured on this album showcase the group exploring two different states: acoustic, and amplified.
