Montserrat is pleased to present TASTE, a multi-media exhibition of film, sculpture, performance and more – inspired by food and identity. The week long exhibition will run concurrently with several events at the space, with an opening reception on Friday, November 27, from 6 to 9 pm.
How do our food choices and traditions contribute to our understanding of identity? For many, taste is increasingly seen as cultural capital. In current visual culture, people are expressing themselves more and more by what they eat. Seen altogether, what we choose to put into our bodies creates a self-portrait of one’s cultural and socio-economic background, gender, and political beliefs.
Food makes a powerful statement, but it is not a democratic forum for expression. It is our hope that, within this space, people will consider these representations and performances of our everyday consumption in a more self-reflective light, understanding how our messaging activates all aspects of the culinary landscape of which we are a part.
Artists include: Fatima Ghanavi, Sionnan Hillier, Esteban Schimpf, Jom Rivers, David Palmer, Sergio Delano, Jimmy Stambrandt, Jom Rivers, Christopher Adams-Cohen, Nathan Hillier, Mary Blodgett, kate-hers RHEE and Antoinette Adams.
Gallery Hours Sunday-Friday 11am-5pm or by appointment.
